Keeping safe programme for Kindergarten

KEEPING SAFE
This week, the children will be learning Protective behaviours through the program Keeping Safe. Over the next few weeks, we will be talking to the children about:

Children need to learn (at an age and developmentally appropriate level):

• the concept of personal space and how this is different for different people
• correct anatomical names of sexual body parts
• the whole body is private
• appropriate and inappropriate touching. No one has the right to touch any part of our body without permission.

From the head down to my toes. I say what goes.

Over the next few weeks on your child's Monday, the  class will be taking part in the Keeping Safe lesson about personal space and body parts. We will be reading stories and emphasising the fact that all parts of their body are private. I understand that the children may laugh and giggle when we talk about the anatomical names, but this is important for every child to know.

Recent research shows that knowing the anatomically correct language terms enhances children’s body image, self-confidence, and openness.

This is in conjunction with the Child Protection Curriculum which has been mandated in all schools in Western Australia.

Please find the lesson outline below if you feel you need to discuss this with your child after their Monday.

Obviously in Kindy we don't label the body parts like the older students, but I use a  doll to show and explain the parts of the body during a mat session followed by an appropriate story.

If you have any quires don't hesitate to come in and see me.

Week's 4-6

In Week 4 we looked  at the the fairy tale, " The Gingerbread Man".  The children made their own gingerbread man . Unfortunately they escaped from the oven when we weren't looking. The children looked all over the school. The chickens and Wilko the dog had not seen them. Luckily Mrs Sweeny found them in the shed and put them back into the classroom.

We practiced the formations of numbers 1-3 as we put real buttons on our gingerbread men drawings.

We are learning  to read our numbers without counting. The song this 'Old Man' (Sorry Dads) was a big hit and enabled the children to explore our bigger numbers to 10. The number formations  of six  and  nine are always tricky.

We focused on our Dad's to celebrate Father's day coming up.

We practiced our running  races for sport's day

We focused on the Letter sounds  Dd for dad, Ee for egg and  Hh for hat.

We had an egg and spoon race

We finally had enough egg cartoons and boxes for box construction. The children made speed boats, cars, houses, jets and were very creative in their master pieces.

We enjoyed our new wooden perspex blocks.

We did some floating and sinking to learn about heavy objects and light objects. It was a real mystery about  who sank the boat in the story? in the story "who sank the boat" by Pamela Allen.
