Keeping safe program: body private parts and safety TERM 3

 KEEPING SAFE:

This week on their chosen Monday, the Kindies will be learning Protective behaviours through the program Keeping Safe. Over the next few weeks, we will be talking to the children about:

Children need to learn (at a young age and on a developmentally appropriate level):

• the concept of personal space and how this is different for different people
• correct anatomical names of sexual body parts
• the whole body is private
• appropriate and inappropriate touching. No one has the right to touch any part of our body without permission.

"From the head down to my toes. I say what goes."

The class will be taking part in the Keeping Safe lesson about personal space and body parts. We will be reading stories and emphasising the fact that all parts of their body are private. I understand that the children may laugh and giggle when we talk about the anatomical names, but this is important for every child to know.

Recent research shows that knowing the anatomically correct language terms enhances children’s body image, self-confidence, and openness.

This is in conjunction with the Child Protection Curriculum which has been mandated in all schools in Western Australia.

Please find the lesson outline below if you feel you need to discuss this with your child after their Monday.

Obviously in Kindy we don't label the body parts like the older students, but I use a male doll and a female doll to show and explain the parts of the body during a mat session followed by a song called " My body is for me".  I reinforce that " our whole body is private, and we use the term sexual body parts to describe the parts of the body that are usually covered by underwear. These parts are called bottom, breasts, penis, testicles and vagina. All parts of the body are private including our bottom and mouth. No one has the right to touch any part of our body without our permission.

I will teach the children exceptions to privacy so they don't get confused such as there are times when trusted adults have to see our private parts e.g.

Babies and nappy changing

children need help at bath and shower time

Children sometimes need to be examined by a doctor, nurse or ambulance.

and at the dentist.

During a mat session, the children have the right to questions and comments. Alot of the discussion is based around different names for different parts " Well Miss Horrocks I call it a willy" and so forth. I never try to undermine what they already know and what they have been taught at home, however I do reinforce that Miss Horrocks teaches you the proper terminology, so we know all about the same private parts that we have to keep safe.

The Kindies dressed up some craft bodies today so they could put clothes on and underwear, to reinforce body safety and our private parts are under our clothes.

If you have any quires about this program don't hesitate to come in and see me.

Next time we will explore the topic of safe touching and un- safe touching when it comes to body safety. It's important at this age that young children understand the different between appropriate and inappropriate touching.

Miss Horrocks.

Comprehension/ Library Books

This term the Kindies will be receiving a story book from the school to take home that will aim to  develop their comprehension and language skills. Most importantly a love for storybooks. This is the process-

- The Comprehension Packs will be given out on one of their Kindy days during the week and they get to keep them until swap over day which will be on their Monday each fortnight e.g Kindy Blue will get a new one on Tuesdays and Kindy Red we get a new book on Wednesdays.

- Please make sure the books are brought back each MONDAY they come to Kindy ready to be swapped over after a fortnightly cycle. If you bring it back earlier that's ok we will keep it until swap over day e.g.

- In your child's comprehension pack they will receive: A story book and a set of questions (and answers to the questions) on a separate laminated page.
- If your child did not read the book, it still must be returned as our librarian changes all of the packs and does not have any spares if one is forgotten.
- If your child is sick, please endeavor to bring it to school with a sibling or another parent as it can affect the whole class if one book is not brought back.

Obviously the stories are too difficult for your child to read so please make this a special time that you can enjoy together. You may decide not to ask any questions until the second reading of your book. It's always nice to enjoy the story first. Some books are just picture books and do not have any words.

Below is an example of what the packs will look like and what they will have in them.

Please look after them.

The table looks like this:

New classroom week beginning the 29th of May

 Dear Kindy Parents,

That time has finally arrived where the new building developments will be under way soon in our OLC  Kindergarten area. That means Both Kindy classes have just moved classrooms to next door just around the corner. You will see their name bag hooks on the corner facing the Pre-Primary playground and my Monday morning smiley face standing at the door. Morning routine will be exactly the same.

-Hang bag up on name hook.

-Bring drink bottle and fruit container inside and place in name tray which are near the entrance door.

- Parents can put any pick up information in the book outside the door on the table.

-Children play the name sign in activity and  then go choose an activity before bell rings for mat time.

The Kindies will still be playing in their old playground and using their toilets until the building officially begins.

I'm looking forward to a fresh and exciting new start in the new classroom, however, I will still continue to maintain that  familiar space that the children have grown to know and love with all the same kindy feels. 💗👌

Kindy Red begin in new classroom tomorrow, Monday the 29th of May and Kindy Blue Tuesday the 30th of May.

See you all soon xxx Miss Horrocks and Kindy Staff.

END OF TERM

WOWZAS!  end of term is approaching.

What do we need to know?

EASTER RAFFLE:

Raffle tickets went out this week.  This is for an Easter raffle run by the Year 4's. Please drop your money and tickets to the office if you want to be in it to win it! This is separate to the Kindy Red's Easter hunt. This raffle is drawn in Week 10.

Miss Horrocks will be having a Easter egg hunt with both classes as well so let me know if  this is a concern and I can substitute chocolate with a little toy inside a plastic egg.

FAMILY AND KEEPING SAFE PROGRAM:

Over the last two weeks we have began the first unit of our Keeping Safe Program and discussed the importance of a trust wall. Who are the adults in your life that you trust and love to ask for help if you feel unsafe. Kindy Red have this lesson on their Monday in Week 10. Kindy Blue had there's last Monday. We discussed that it could be Mum, Dad, Nan, Pop, their teachers and the police. We don't really focus on stranger danger anymore but the importance of trusting people who we know and make us feel safe.

EASTER STORY:

This Week the Kindies have learnt the importance of Easter and have been told the story about Jesus and what a kind man he tried to be on earth. At a Kindy age, I explain to them what happened to Jesus and why he went to heaven, but I don't go into detail about the crucifixion. In this way the children learn about the celebration of Easter and all about new life just as Jesus came alive again in heaven to be with his father, God. We sing songs, read stories and share in lots of craft activities together. We love Easter time in Kindy!

END OF TERM:

Pillows and hats will be sent home in week 10 to be washed over the holidays.

I think that's all folks

:) Miss Horrocks

CLASS REPS and Parent helper roster

ITS WEEK 4  ALREADY !

CLASS REPS NEEDED FOR EACH CLASS PLEASE!

I WOULD LOVE A NEW FAMILY MEMBER AND A PRE- EXISTING FAMILY WHO KNOW THE ROPES FOR KRED AND KBLUE.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP.

I can give you a class name list and if  the parent reps could set up a communication email thread or a private Kindy facebook page. This would be greatly appreciated.

Also it is the beginning of Week 4. I would like to welcome parents to come in for parent help now that the children have settled in to Kindy life. Please put your name down for MONDAYS, THURSDAYS or a FRIDAY ONLY.  The roster for you to fill in is at the welcome entrance board in Kindy from 8.45am- 10.30am. If you think you being in the classroom would be a disruption to your child's learning I totally understand. There will be plenty of opportunities to come in at a later date. We have Mother's day and Father's day celebrations and we always need help in other ways like our tea towel washing.

Once again thank you parents for your wonderful support in preparing your children each morning for Kindy. I'm so proud of how well the children have settled in and how speedy they are all learning the routines of the classroom.

Now can you please tell your children to slow down and stop being so clever. This term is going by too fast already!

Thank you,

MISS HORROCKS

SEESAW

A new platform for sharing what's been happening in Kindy is ready for you.

We welcome the Seesaw  family app.

Seesaw is a great digital platform for parents to see the learning given to you by your classroom teacher in the form of messages, work samples and photos. You can access the information through your phone.

Parents will receive their child's learning code by a hard copy.

Then you  scan the QR code to access your child's individual learning journal.  I also highly recommend you click 'yes' to the notifications prompt as then you will be sent a reminder each time there is something new uploaded. I am hoping to try to share something at least each week or fortnightly to show the great learning that is happening in our classrooms. This sometimes cannot always happen during a busy Kindy week.

1:Go to  seesaw website https://web.seesaw.me/ or install the seesaw family app for IOS or Android

2:  tap I'm a family member

3: tap Create family account

SCAN CODE

5 Create Account with a password.

Then you can go to their Journal, activities or notices.

You can also press on inbox to see what other information the classroom teacher has posted.

You know where I am if you have any queries all we can go through the app during gathering time in the coming weeks.

Kindy Calendar days

Monday, 30 January 2023

Welcome to Kindy 2023

 Dear Kindy Parents and families,

The special time in your child's life is finally here.. Kindy here we come!

Kindy Red will also be known as our class totem name Djiljit (Djiljit is a traditional Wadandi word meaning 'fish')  begins Wednesday the 1st of February. Doors open at 8.45am.

Kindy blue will be known as our class totem  name Binga ( Binga is a traditional Wadandi word meaning saltbush) begins Thursday the 2nd of February.

Hi my name is Miss Katie Horrocks. I  will be your child's classroom teacher. I have been at this beautiful school for 12 years and there is no other place than Dunsborough I want to call home.  I love the beach, my border collie puppy and doing exercise. I play community sport and I'm a bit of an Eagles football fan. I have one coffee a day and that's all I need ( I drink mocha's for that extra leap in my day hint hint :). My seven niece and nephews keep me very busy outside work but spending time with family and friends is very important to me. I am one big kid myself and I hope that every child that enters my room bounces off my happy and vibrant energy.
It is with great excitement that we welcome you and your child to Kindergarten for 2023. We are looking forward to a happy and fun filled year of new learning and exploring. I hope you all had a relaxing holiday enjoying the summer weather and making precious family memories. I am looking forward to getting to know your gorgeous children and working with you very soon.

Dear Kindy kid-

“You're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting,
So... get on your way!”

  • School begins for you child on Wednesday the 1st of February for Kindy Red. Thursday the 2nd of February for Kindy Blue. Children are beginning with a full day from 8.45am-3pm. A Half day is also an option if you think your child needs this to begin with.
  • Please hang your child's bag on the hooks on the outside veranda next to their name. Its always a great idea if the child does all their jobs for themselves. Child can bring in with them their:
  • - Hat
    -Drink bottle
-Fruit container. Lunch box will stay in their bag.
These belongings will be going into their own name tray. Just a reminder that every item must be labelled.
  • Please pack a small lunch box with morning tea in it. (Fruit, crackers, cheese etc) and a larger separate lunch box with their main lunch in it for their full day. Clearly label both lunch boxes with your child's name.  Please note we are a nut allergy friendly school. Please do not pack nuts or any nut butters.  Students are not allowed to share their food.
  • Each child must have a water bottle.  Please label it. Place the water bottle on the shelf inside.
  • We suggest that you pack a spare set of underwear and pants in case of toileting or water play accidents.  Leave these in the bottom of the school bag.
  • Each child will require a SMALL pillow for rest time.  A small 'cot' pillow will be perfect.
  • A communications diary will be placed on the drawers near the entrance door.  If you are not picking up your child please write in the book to tell us who will be. Any children on bus or pick up lane must also be entered into the communication diary. If your plans change during the day then please ring the office and leave a message.
  •  Dismissal is 3pm.  If you get held up please ring the office to inform them. If you have any urgent communications please email Miss Horrocks  at katie.horrocks@cewa.edu.au.

The first day of Kindy can be quite over -whelming for most children and it is absolutely normal behaviour for your child to have separation anxiety. Please remember that if you are calm and confident then your child will follow your cues. Please keep your child calm and happy before school and try not to be late as this is unsettling for little people. When you arrive show your child where their drawer is, where their water bottle is and where they should hang them. Bring them up to the teachers to say hello and introduce yourselves. Once this is done find a play station to work at.  There will be books to read, games to play and drawing to do. We understand tears are normal and if by any chance your child is distressed after their parents have left, a call will be made home as soon as we can.

I hope you can trust us that your child is in safe and loving hands. All children will need a little time to adjust to this new environment, which is going to be just so busy with play and fun learning with new friends.

If you are worried about separation anxiety then this video by Maggie Dent may be of help.
